CMS Clinker Awarded Highest 3-Star Rating For 5S/QE
Tuesday,
26 July 2011, Kuching - Stepping up a notch to instill good
housekeeping practices in its operation, CMS Clinker’s commitment to
improvements at the workplace certainly paid off when the company was
awarded the highest 3-Star Rating by the Malaysian Productivity
Corporation (MPC) at its 5S/Quality Environment Convention for Sabah –
Sarawak region. The convention was held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on 21
July 2011. Garry Brandah, QA Executive/5S Coordinator for CMS Clinker
received the award on behalf of the company.
“With this recognition, we hope our team
will continue to work harder to make our working environment neater
and more organized to improve our safety, environment and performance
records”, said Hisham Mohmurad Amin, CMS Clinker’s Plant Manager.
The win is more significant given that
implementation of 5S into its culture is a new practice for CMS
Clinker. Earnest efforts to improve the housekeeping of the sprawling
operation and processes according to 5S practices began just two years
ago.
When
asked to nail CMS Clinker’s winning edge in their entry at the 5S/QE
Convention, the Clinker team attributed their success to the
commitment of the entire workforce and support from Management to see
through the improvement exercise on better housekeeping and compliance
to environmental and safety practices.
Along the way, CMS Clinker was able to
generate additional revenue from the sale of unwanted items such as
scrap metal and propose innovation for the substitution of raw
materials with alternatives such as sludge.
The implementation of the 5S practices
has been a morale booster for the CMS Clinker team by helping to
increase employee productivity as seen in the reduced stock-take time,
quick retrieval of spare parts, and shorter down time.
With this award in the bag, CMS Clinker now qualifies for the National
Level 5S/QE Convention expected to take place on 19 - 20 October 2011
at Sunway Convention Centre, KL.
The other participants from Sarawak
making it for the National round include CMS Cement, Sibu Water Board,
Sibu Municipal Council, Kementerian Alam Sekitar dan Kesihatan Awam (KASKA)
and Pusat Pembangunan Kemahiran Sarawak.
Well done CMS Clinker and CMS Cement!
Lead the way for CMS in demonstrating that a safe and incident-free
workplace improves productivity!
CMS Clinker's First Blood Drive Proves to be a Big Success
Tuesday, 16 September 2008, Mambong: CMS Clinker's Blood Drive 2008 attracted a total of 29 participants today who collectively gave 29 pints of their blood to help strangers in need.
It was the first ever Blood Drive organized by the company since becoming part of CMS Group last year. Based on the number of employees who volunteered to give blood, CMS Clinker's inaugural Blood Drive has proved to be a big success.
With the clinker factory located in Mambong, 27 km from Kuching city, the team did not expect the good response from other CMS subsidiaries who joined in the Blood Drive yesterday.
"We want to thank our fellow donors from CMS Trust, CMS Concrete Products, and CMS Roads who came a long way to support the blood drive today," said Sika Karong, who headed the event.
When it came to participants, CMS Clinker, of course, made up the lion's share. The majority of donors were plant operations-based, with a 9-member strong organizing team from Administration and Human Resources departments in CMS Clinker.
The Blood Drive is part of the CMS "Doing Good" Community Outreach programme which encourages employees from the Group to give back in any way they can to the community. Around the Group, CMS Cement and the companies of Construction & Road Maintenance SBU regularly organize Blood Drives throughout the year.

CMS Cement new owner of Sarawak Clinker
Friday, 30 November 2007, Kuching -- CMS Cement Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Main Board-listed conglomerate Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad, is the new owner of Sarawak Clinker Sdn Bhd.
In an announcement made to Bursa Malaysia today, CMS Cement said that all conditions precedent to the Share Sale Agreement signed at the end of August with Maybach Investment Co. and Mirzan Mahathir had been met. These conditions included obtaining relevant approvals from regulatory bodies and conducting a financial, operational and legal due diligence.
Through the exercise, CMS Cement has successfully acquired 146,337,729 ordinary shares of RM1.00 each representing 100% equity interest in Sarawak Clinker.
The acquisition was valued at RM131.7 million, arrived at a "willing-buyer-willing-seller" basis.
The acquisition of Sarawak Clinker is seen as an integral part of transforming CMS Cement, Sarawak’s sole cement manufacturer, into a fully integrated cement manufacturer.
Clinker is the raw material in the manufacture of cement whilst CMS Cement is currently Sarawak Clinker’s only customer.
The Sarawak Clinker plant, located at Mambong, 21 km from Kuching, includes quarrying, a raw mill for grinding, coal grinding, and kiln burning.
With its main raw material now to be supplied in-house, CMS Cement can look forward to improving efficiency levels and capacity and integrating operations between the clinker and cement manufacturing facilities.
The acquisition also allows CMS Cement to potentially expand its product mix beyond the Ordinary Portland cement it currently produces.
CMS Group Managing Director Dato’ Richard Curtis predicts the acquisition of Sarawak Clinker to play a major role in the Group’s strategic growth plan in 2008.
“With the acquisition of Sarawak Clinker, CMS Cement becomes an integrated producer of cement. With our planned expansion of the clinker plant’s production, we will be able to meet all CMS Cement’s needs. This will reduce our production costs and improve our ability to efficiently meet Sarawak’s growing cement needs”, said Dato’ Richard.
“We will also be looking to export surplus production to neighbouring countries”, added Dato’ Richard.
In addition, CMS Cement expects to benefit from increased demand within Sarawak given the State’s focus to develop its central region with energy-intensive industries.
CMS Cement is Sarawak’s sole cement manufacturer. It operates two plants in Kuching and Bintulu, and has a total installed production capacity of 1.75 million tones per year.
The Kuching Pending plant caters to the needs of Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman and Sibu divisions whilst CMS Cement’s Bintulu plant caters to the needs of the rapidly growing north-east region of Sarawak.
