Tanjung Kidurong/Suai/Bakam Coastal Road

Valued at RM581 million, the project is the single largest road construction project ever awarded by the Federal Government in Sarawak. PPES Works undertook construction of the 178 km coastal road on a design & build basis. The coastal road project is part of the Government's Masterplan to construct a second highway running along the coast of Sarawak. With its completion, new areas have been opened up for development, adding impetus to economic growth.

Apart from a safer journey along an alternative route, road users now benefit from shorter traveling time and distance - the journey from Miri to Bintulu has been shortened by 48km from 230km to 182km with the availability of the new road.

Of the total distance of road, 51 km (from Tg. Kiduring to Bintulu – Similajau road) was built to Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) Road Standard R5, which is a 7.3 m wide pavement single carriageway with provision for a future second carriageway. Another 122 km of road (from Similajau to Bakam) was built to JKR R3 standard of a 6 m wide, 2-lane single carriageway. A final stretch of 4 km of road (from Bakam Road to Tg. Lobang) was built to JKR R5 standard as a 7.3 m wide pavement 2-lane double carriageway.

Construction of the coastal road included 3 major bridges over Suai, Niah and Sibuti rivers. A total of 22 minor bridges, over 300 pipe culverts and 68 box culverts were also incorporated into the construction of the coastal road covering the Northern half of the vast state of Sarawak.

PPES Works is proud to have completed the project on time and within budget despite challenging soil conditions.
