Seberang beach gets cleaned up

Seberang beach gets cleaned up

12 October 2019 – Beach cleanup projects have recently been on the rise in both global and local scenes – and they do wonders for environmental NGOs in spreading the word on the importance of a clean environment. To show support for green initiatives such as this, six spirited volunteers from CMS Roads Sdn Bhd (RMU Mukah) joined the organizing committee of PIBG SK Kampung Seberang, Mukah and its local community for their annual beach cleanup themed “Sayangi Pantai Kita”.

Our volunteers spent their Saturday morning picking up, gathering and disposing of any trash found scattered along the beach. They also lent a helping hand to the Fun Run Committee of the school by clearing their parking area to be used for their 2019 Fun Run, and ensuring that the runners’ route is in a clean and litter-free state.

New parking spaces at Masjid Darul Muhsinin

New parking spaces at Masjid Darul Muhsinin

21 September 2019 – Limited parking space does not stand in the way of religious devotion – although being able to park safely and nearby the place of worship does help. Such is the case for the community of Kampung Tanjung Harapan, Simunjan who experienced parking woes due to their mosque’s small compound. Thus, 53 employees from CMS Roads Sdn Bhd (RMU Simunjan) organised and participated in a day of gotong-royong at Masjid Darul Muhsinin to help put their parking issue to rest.

Our volunteers spent the day removing one of the mosque’s fences to create more space and new access into the compound. A road shoulder was also created to ease parking while the remaining amount of roadwork material sponsored by the company was used to lay asphalt pavement on the entire mosque compound, replacing the previous gravel and soil mosque-goers used to walk on. Other volunteers helped to clean the mosque’s fans and sweep its floors while the rest cooked lunch for the everyone.

More greens at St. Michael Church, Padawan

More greens at St. Michael Church, Padawan

21 September 2019 – Our team of CMS volunteers travelled deep into the heart of Padawan town to help the villagers and church community of St. Michael Church, Teng Bukap. The church building was completed this year and held its first mass to the congregation of Catholics from its neighbourhood on 25 May 2019, just days ahead of the local festive Gawai celebration. Located 30km from Padawan town, the large church acts as a mother church to the smaller churches in its vicinity and could hold a congregation of up to 1,200 churchgoers from twelve villages from around Teng Bukap.

Chairman of the St. Michael Church Committee, Mr Kevin Jindes, and 59 villagers greeted our team of 45 volunteers as they arrived at the site for a briefing on the work laid out for the day. After a hearty breakfast prepared by the church committee, our volunteers together with the villagers, equipped with their gardening tools – grass-cutter, hoe, and machete cleared the church’s lawn of weeds and topped-up the soil to plant grass which they have gathered from a nearby field. Our company’s pick-up truck made a few trips to the field to pile-up grass and covered the entire church lawn. Plants and palm trees were also planted along the road kerb in front of the church and flower seedlings were placed in the raised bed garden at the church’s entrance.

This CSR activity was organised by CMS Construction Materials & Trading Division with CMS Quarries Sdn Bhd donating some 350 metric tons of aggregate worth RM5,25 for the church’s large parking area. The work of laying and compacting the aggregates were carried out by the church’s contractor.

Gotong-royong at Wong Ajong recreational park

Gotong-royong at Wong Ajong recreational park

4 August 2019 – Located approximately 35 minutes away from Engkilili, Wong Ajong is a recreational park and favoured picnic spot among local residents. Although a 25-minute walk from the park’s entrance to the actual recreational area is necessary, the lulling sounds of flowing water in the nearby creek and the tranquilising sight of tall, leafy trees make the journey worth one’s while.

To help the local community with the upkeep of the park, 50 employees from CMS Roads Sdn Bhd (RMU Sri Aman) got together for a gotong-royong session to clean up the picnic area and repair the park facilities. With five bags of cement, one tonne of 2’’ DCR, five tonnes of sand and 20 pieces of plank sponsored by the company, our team freshened up the park by replacing the old, deteriorating wooden stairs and shed floor with new ones, and by repairing the park’s much-battered walkway.
